Mother-Daughter Reading Group Supplemental Questions

  1. Does your relationship bear any similarity to the two mother-daughter relationships in the book? Which does it resemble more? How?
  2. How is your sense of what makes you "successful" - whether that means having children, attaining a certain income level, achieving certain career goals, or getting good grades - different from and similar to your mother's/daughter's sense of what makes, or would make, her successful? Discuss what both of you consider "success," both for yourself and for each other. Do either of you have a different standard of success when it comes to yourself? If so, why? Are either of you surprised by the others' answer?
  3. If you were born the year your mother/your daughter was born, how do you think your goals, dreams, and sense of self would be different, if at all?
  4. Would you rather be happy or successful?
